Odds, Ends, Updates and Highlights

May 25, 2011 at 05:27 (My Art, Shoutouts, Sports Cards, The Trading Post) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Hey.  Wassup?  Got some random stuff to hit on, so here goes.

First, there is one slot left in The Daily Dimwit‘s Ovation Case Group Break!  One team of your choice and a second to be randomed off, for $30.  Go for it!

~~~~
Next, I’ve gotten into trade talks with all of the following recently!  Cardboard Collections, The Good Dimwit again, Things are Funner Here, the legendary Night Owl, Argyled Plaschke, The Lost Collector, Potch Wheeler, Nomo’s Sushi Platter, Too Many Vergrandersons, Cards on Cards, Offy and more!  I know what you’re thinking.  Why do I always get myself in so over my head with trades that at least a couple will end up taking forever?  Well, this time I’m not in over my head (it just looks that way).  Every single person up there has most of their cards set aside for them already.  Once finalized (three already are), these will start going out in June.
Stuff for Marie and Cardboard Conundrum is pretty much ready to go and just needs sent.  I’m pretty sure that despite my extreme brokeness, I will be able to send these towards the end of the week after the weather breaks (it’s storming something fierce as I type this).
On top of all that, I think I’ll finally be sending what I believe are my last four horrendously long overdue trades in the near future as well.
Finally, check back this evening to see what football cards I have available.  I should at least have most of my swatches and autos listed by then.
Oh, and for the sake of having a picture in this post, here’s a look at my latest artistic endeavor:
Pencils on the X-Men blank variant cover I picked up on Free Comic Book Day, which wasn't even close to free. L-R: Jubilee, Storm, Wolverine, Cyclops, Pixie, Angel, Emma Frost.
That’s all for now.  Seeya.
Jubilee is a vampire now.  Vampires are cool.
Group Breakage
October 13, 2010 at 22:46 (Shoutouts, Uncategorized) (, , )
No, not me. Not yet anyway. Over at Cardboard Collections. It’s cheap, the box choices are interesting, and there are plenty of good teams still available.  So go claim a team and get in on the group break goodness. ;)
The H-Word
March 25, 2010 at 01:35 ((Not)Sports Cards, In This Life, My Art, Shoutouts, Sports Cards) (, , , , , , , , )
No, not hell.
Not even hentai (sadness, I know.  Sorry.).
I’m on hiatus.
I love you, goodbye.
I’ll stop in long enough to scan some stuff when I can, as well as posting an interesting non-sport box break, but don’t expect a Heartbreaking Cards-type non-hiatus hiatus, not even close (though I do hope to contribute more to his brainchild APtbNL in the future).  Sleep has gone mostly to crap again (barely coherent as I write this), and it’s backing up the Breygent sketch cards, and I can’t keep my sh*t together even to the most marginal degree to start with.  So something’s gotta give, and this is it for now.  The endless quest for consistently decent sleep, sketch cards, and a massive rearranging of crap that probably requires a professional rearranger of crap looms, so until I have time, inspiration, and focus to blog again beyond a cameo, this is my “lost my smile” speech, and I guess I’ll see y’all when I sees ya.
Also, know that I’m not skipping out on anybody.  All previous trades are still on (email me with details, I’m not even sure I remember half of them anymore… *sigh* click the blogger profile on the sidebar, my email addy is there), and those that I already owe should find cards owed in your various mailboxes… eventually.  I’ve failed so many times, I guess just knowing that they will get there someday is the best consolation I can offer (thank you all for being way more understanding about my slowness than I am with myself, btw… it’s something I guilt trip over often :( ).  And I’ll be sure to check up on some of your blogs from time-to-time when the mood strikes or if you link it in a tweet.
I guess it’s no coincidence I’m mostly closing up shop at a time when baseball especially, and sports cards in general… well, let’s just say I couldn’t give two delightfully disgusting Gellman-esque unnecessarily specific descriptions of poop about sports cards right now.  All my card related concern is being poured into the sketch cards at hand, with just a pinch leftover to pick up the odd sketch card or Project S.T.A.L.K.E.R. addition (mission accomplished on both accounts this month).  I’m not sure when or if the sports card itch will ever fully return, but the blogging itch will, so the focus may shift rather harshly upon returning to irregular regularity, though I’m unsure what the focus might shift to.
And, Beardy, your Markaki sketch card is done.  The couple of peeps that were cool enough to stay up waaaay into the night to see me draw it up were quite impressed, so I hope you will be too.
Finally, being a bigtime professional artist now (I couldn’t even come close to typing that with a straight face, just so you know :P ), you should totally commission me for money.  Cash will come in immeasurably handy when I make my big escape from crappytown, much moreso than for cards I plan to keep.  And since there’s no messy as hell collection to fight, you’ll actually get them shortly after they’re finished.  How long they take to finish… is another matter entirely.
Now I’m going to shut up because this post is proving way less short & sweet than I was intending.  Much love and a temporary goodbye.
Until our next…
Trading Roll Call!
February 4, 2010 at 02:49 (Shoutouts, Sports Cards, The Trading Post, Uncategorized) (, , , , )
I’ve been slacking off on the blog of late, as you may have noticed.  My focus is waning, but I digress…
Now that I’m not broke again though, it’s time to get my head back in the game, if only enough to send out some cards.  Here’s everyone I owe/want to send cards:
The Great Sports Name Hall of Fame
McCann Can Triple
Play at the Plate- Contest Grand Prize
Collective Troll- Contest Booby Prize, maybe other stuffs.
Sooz
Marie
Field of Cards- Not entirely sure, but I was asked to do a Markakis sketch card as part of the trade.  That’s cool.
Roll Out the Barrel
Baseball Card Stuff
Sharp Since ’92- You still want some A&G minis??
The Mojo Hand- Holliday Refractor!
drewscards- Pena trifecta completer and other stuff undetermined
Wicked Ortega
BlazerShane
White Sox Cards
I think that’s everyone, but if I forgot someone, let me know please.
In addition, I have received cards from Night Owl, Baseball Card Stuff, and Old School Breaks’ Group Break.  I might get around to doin’ up proper posts on them one of these months.
Right now though, I just want go to sleep for about the next 16 hours… *sigh*
Oh, here’s a pic, cuz I can:
D-Wade Murad Mini
This is my sleeve.  Notice the heart on it…
Now I’m Ready
January 13, 2010 at 19:52 (Shoutouts, Sports Cards) (, , , , , , , , , )
Last night was awesome!  I did one sketch card start to finish that I’d been meaning to do for awhile, and inked & colored about a half dozen more.  As such, I’m feeling plenty good enough to mess with cards and my blog again.  And not a moment too soon either.  More cards from Tim arrived today, these being the ones for the Eddie Mathews jersey.  Lots of great stuff in there. :)   Also, two Deron Williams jerseys arrived from Shot Not Taken.  And a new Brooke Morales card came from eBay, and a couple more should be arriving soon.  Project S.T.A.L.K.E.R. progresses, lol.
I’m still not going to post any trades yet though.  And no, I don’t care if Thorzul hates trade posts.  I don’t even think he’s ever been to my blog anyway.  I just wanted to take a minute right now to give some major props to some people involved in the National Chicle bruhaha over the weekend.
First, dayf the Cardboard Junkie for rants that pretty much summed up everything that’s wrong with and/or pisses us off about the hobby.  They were passionate and on-point to such a degree that I’d have to say he should probably now be considered one of the leading voices on the current state of the hobby.
Next, Chris Olds, the face of Beckett on the internet.  A fair bit of dayf’s wrath was directed at him, but his coverage of things was pretty decent, and raised my opinion of him a lil’ bit.  I don’t really know him beyond the smug, garish ogre he is hopelessly characterized as by many of the leading bloggers, but ol’ boy handled his business well enough here, and proved he has something resembling of journalistic skillz, so I’ll give him his due.
Next, it was great to hear from the artists commissioned by topps to do the upcoming National Chicle set, particularly Paul Lempa who did the Chipper/Ruth in modern Braves uni/Magglio Ordonez (that’s who it looks like to me, dammit!) card everybody got all militant about.  Being a wannabe artist, it pleased me that the dude was so positive about everything.  The same can’t be said for all the artists interviewed, but that’s where we’re going next.
Finally, to Sooz of a Cardboard Problem for the verbal whoopin’ on Monty Sheldon, explaining why crankypants’ quote was incredibly an douchy and arrogant one.  Good work, Sooz!  It stated why we are awesome, what you get yourself into as a writer/artist/entertainer of any kind, and made me proud to be a part of this hobby. :)
Until our next, I leave you with this, just because…
The tiniest swatch of Carlton Fisk jersey ever!
I am the Bazooka Joe heartthrob du jour…
Quick Hits
December 4, 2009 at 01:02 (My Art, Shoutouts, Sports Cards, The Trading Post) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )
Just have a few of notes to mention tonight, since I’m not up for the 3-5 hours it’ll take to do a post for my first trade Wicked Ortega (It was big!  I don’t think the 9 or so scans I did was more than 40% of the package), which is the only other thing I have handy to talk about at the moment, since my Allen Iverson post is now moot (and I couldn’t be happier!).
I finally got around to doing a bunch of scans of eBay stuff, pack breakage, my second trade with Wicked Ortega, the clunkers and more from Roll out the Barrel, a few other random cards, a couple sketch cards I finally finished, and some quickie sketches from one of my sketchbooks.  And then I forgot to bring them back to my place… Yeah, I suck. -.-;
Anyway, you’ve got that stuff to look forward to when I do finally get all that good stuff over here.  And I’ve got a box of Fantastic Four Archives I picked up on Blowout Cards over the weekend to look forward to arriving near Christmas.  Here’s hoping for a really cool sketch card.
Speaking of sketch cards, does anyone know where I can get some binders on the really really cheap?  I need one for my sketch card and Benchwarmers collections, and probably ones for other stuff eventually.  My ginormo 2005 Bowman Heritage redemption binder won’t hold my random insert/WBC collections and player collections forever.
Provided I pick up some more cases, cards will be going out, starting this weekend, to the following peeps: Nachos Grande, Shot Not Taken, Roll out the Barrel, Night Owl, and The Great Sports Name Hall of Fame, and possibly another 3-5 more to be named later.  It’s gonna be a busy month, or what qualifies as such for me.  Fortunately, there are no $7+ packages here, so I won’t break myself with all this.
Hmm… I thought that was it, but since I just now finished a couple more sketch cards, I thought I’d mention them.  Rick “Wild Thing” Vaughn and Batman are now done.  I will scan them someday.  They’ll be available for sale or trade or something maybe.  The blog stars of AnotherMaria and Ms. Latina I’m coloring as I type this very paragraph won’t though.  Once I finish it, I’m going to send it off to each of them to sign.  It will be my first TTM auto. ♥ :D
Goodnight, and apologies for such a crappy, halfhearted post.  Maybe the next one will be better.
Maybe.
You’re thinking of tacos…
Keyboard Unfail
November 26, 2009 at 10:58 (Shoutouts, Sports Cards, The Trading Post) (, , , , , , )
The long national nightmare is over, I have a keyboard again. :P
Let us touch on a few things quickly before I go hang with da fam and watch football and eat so much turkey and mashed potatoes & gravy that it starts dripping out my ears!
First, trade packages were sended out to M. Ryan of Ryan’s Memorabilia Blog, Brian of Play at the Plate, and The Don hisself, Mr. Wicked Ortega late Monday afternoon.  And you’ll be pleased to know that I found the DeMetrius Williams Sweet Spot auto, Mike.  It’s pretty ridonkulous.  I have no idea if there be mail service on Friday or Saturday (I make up for my slowness by being oblivious! :P ), but if not, hopefully they will make it by Monday, and provide you all a slightly gentler landing coming back to earth after the long holiday weekend.
Addresses, I need addresses.  Who do I need addresses from?  I need addresses from Roll out the Barrell and Sooz of A Cardboard Problem so I can sends them stuff.  And I’d like to send stuff to Marie too, but I still don’t know if she wants any of the Linds/Canos/Martins/etc I have.
Ooh ooh ooh, here’s one for McCann Can Triple for when I finally get around to sending stuff to her late next summer (I REALLY hope I’m joking about that…).  Do you have many Braves hits, specifically Chipper Jones?  I got two Chipper jerseys in the five packs of 2005 topps Pack Wars I busted on twitter on Tuesday, and I was wondering if you’d like one of them.  I will scan them (and a bunch of other stuff) later today.  They are shiny.
I’ve gotten a TON of great cards in the last two days, and I can’t wait to scan them for you all to see.  So much stuff came on Tuesday and Wednesday that I didn’t even feel the need to stop in the card aisle on the way out of Walmart when I picked up the new keyboard.  An embarrassment of riches, to be sure.  I received all my larger things from eBay, and received a trade from Wicked Ortega that had one of the greatest cards I have ever seen, so business is about to pick up on the ol’ blog.  And somewhere in there, I will reminisce(sp?) about Allen Iverson, one of the greatest basketball players that ever lived, who called it a career yesterday.
Until our next… HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
To Do List~!
July 9, 2009 at 23:31 (Baseball Card Zen, In This Life, Shoutouts, The Trading Post) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )
I intend to finish all these things before my box of 2009 Allen & Ginter comes, probably in the middle of next week, judging by the time my first box took.  These are in not listed by order of importance, by the way.  I’m just writing them as I think of them.
1.) Get all my baseball cards sorted by team (except for ’08 Allen & Ginter and a couple others that I have a bunch of that may be useful to set-builders). [Somewhere between 1/2 and 2/3 of the way done I think.  Unfortunately, my urge to do the Gambit sketch card is outweighing going any further, but I think I did pretty okay overall.]
2.) Send SASE to Mario at Wax Heaven for the ’09 Football Heroes inserts. [With the mighty Dayf's valuable information, I might be able to send this as soon as the next time I'm out.]
3.) Figure out what a SASE entails, because I’ve never sent one before. [Done- Wow, Dayf really is the expert at doing the bubble mailer version!]
4.) Finish MarieSooz‘ sketch cards.  Albert Pujols for Marie, Kevin Kouzmanoff and oh, maybe Gabe Kapler for Sooz. [We're all done... unless I add some color to Kouz, Kap, & Pujols.]
5.) Get the sketch cards, as well as the rest of Sooz’ trade ready to send. [Think I'm done, since I've only got about two cards that she's after.  Working on another trade with Marie as well, since I found my Canos, Jobas, & Phil Hughes'.]
6.) Get a bigger bubble mailer for the cards I’m sending to Matt of Heartbreaking Cards of Staggering Genius. [Done]
7.) Find the Bazooka Gold Chunk Aaron Rodgers rookie for what I’m sending to Matt, and then send the cards. [Yatta, I FOUND IT~!!  Always in the last place ya look. >.<  Also found a 2003 Donruss Elite Series Glavine #ed /2500 & some other stuff with it.  So, umm... w00t~!]
8.) SEND DINGED CORNERS THEIR FREAKING CARDS ALREADY~!!!!!!!!!!!  It’s only been what… 9 months, since you made that trade?  Good grief Lonestarr, send them something at least! [Asian players are packed up & ready to be sent.  Will send next time I'm out.]
Yes, I fail.
9.) Send Baseball Dad my pathetically small list of Sandberg cards. [Done- I had a few more Rynos than I thought!]
10.) Prepare some Indians to send to Baseball Dad. [Done]
11.) Get my Orioles cards organized to send to some people in the Orioles card blogger nation, just because. [Done.  Now when will I ever get around to contacting any of them?]
12.) Get my Washington Redskins cards in order because I want to make a trade with Chris from Sac Bunt because there are a bunch of cards on his trade list I’m interested in. [At least half done.  Will contact you soon about a trade, Chris.]
13.) This one I have to get done tomorrow.  Pay for the box of cards I picked up in the big sale at Dave & Adam’s. [Done]
14.) Get over wanting to call them Dave & Buster’s.  *stomach grumbles* [Done- Though now I'm doing the opposite! >.<]
15.) Get the UDX cards ready for McCann Can Triple. [Done, but need to to double-check them sometime.]
16.) Get some more White Sox Cards ready for Steve. [They are in order, but I'm not too sure I have anything he doesn't.  Will have to check later.]
All that’s left that I can do before I bust my box is to finish organizing my cards, send an email or two, and check a couple of want lists.  Won’t be able to send any stuff out until next time I’m out.
I will not open my 2009 Allen & Ginter box until I get pretty much all of this done.  I will check things off the list as I get through them, so you can keep up with my progress, especially if you appear on the list.  Let me know if I’ve forgotten anyone or anything, or if you want to be added to the list too.  It’s gonna be a busy week. :)
It’s go time~!
Blasters, We Got Blasters
March 1, 2009 at 13:12 (Shoutouts, Sports Cards, The Trading Post) (, , , , , , , , )
I picked up  another ’08 Goudey blaster from K-Mart.  Maybe I’m a glutton for punishment.  At least if I’m gonna get a craptacular blaster, it’s half off right?  I’m starting to think I’m the only person who’s actually buying them, because the amount of blasters collecting dust never seems to get smaller.  I had my mom choose it since my luck has been so unflinchingly horrendous with blasters in general.  She didn’t do much better, but it wasn’t horrible overall.
I got a black & white  Derek Jeter for the unclaimed stack of Jeters waiting to be traded and couple more Red Sox to throw into my trade with Shoebox Legends.  And I got a Rod Carew and a Griffey for myself.  The real winner from this blaster though is whoever wants to trade for some Cardinals legends.  I got Stan Musial, Ozzie Smith Sports Royalty (the very last card in the last pack I believe), and Lou Brock.
This wasn’t all I got though.  I also went to Target and got an ’09 Upper Deck Series 1 blaster.  And it was good.  I had my mom choose that one too.  She did better on it.  Cards of note include 20th Anniversary Retrospective cards of Michael Jordan and Margaret Thatcher, O-Pee-Chees of Randy Johnson and John Smoltz, a Black Ultra Rare Chipper Jones Starquest, a Gold Rare Griffey StarQuest (which I am keeping), and an uncommon A-Rod (no commons in this one *le gasp*), and a spiffy looking team USA card.  The guaranteed jersey was even good for once.  I got Josh Hamilton.  Sure kicks the stuffins out of the Zack Duke jersey from the ’08 Series 2 blaster I got a few days ago at any rate.  Does anyone out there in blogland want it?  Or (almost) anything else from these blasters for that matter?  I’m only keeping the Cubs and Griffey, and the White Sox I already have a destination in mind for, but everything else is up for grabs.
I wanted to mention something about how these Upper Deck Cards look before I go.  To my eye the design is absolutely outstanding (special commendation for the bright and colorful Team Leaders subset) and even blows away Topps’ much improved ’09 effort.  The base cards and inserts are all colorful (and this year’s StarQuests are a huge step up) as well, something that Upper Deck is not normally known for, but I really like it.  Whatever extra creative effort that may have went into the flagship set in 2009 really paid off.
I noticed almost immediately there seems to be one thing amiss though… and that is the photography.  Not to say that it is bad in and of itself, but it seems like a lot of the shots are so up close and personal that you could smell the player’s breath.  It may be an effect of the bottom border being closed off, but I’m not digging it, especially with Topps’ borders being smaller than usual and a good deal of their photography actually being on par with some of Upper Deck’s better efforts from the past.
Ok I’m all done here.  Seeyaz next time, when I’ll have a couple of possibly worthwhile ideas to roll out before I start dropping the occasional sketch on ya.
PS: And I might finally have the cards for Dinged Corners sent out by then too.  I may need your address though ladies.  I had found it awhile back when I was almost ready to send it out in I think December of last year, but I believe the bubble mailer with your address is long gone now.  And lets just say the lot (which was about 80 cards strong as of December) has gotten a little bigger since then.
By about 3x…
