Diamond Giveaway Update

Since I haven’t mentioned in awhile and it’s all I’ve got handy, here is where I currently stand in the Diamond Giveaway.  I’ve managed to score several Diamond Die-Cuts via random vintage trading, and have finally landed a few keepers.  Behold, for I now have a screen grabber!

Vlad, via Carlos Santana..

Shin-Soo Choo, via Ricky Romero..

Big Papi, via David Price..

King Felix, via Roger Maris..

Aramis, via '66 Bolin, '75 Bumbry, '78 Pentz, Dierker, & McClure, '82 Cey, and '85 Ozzie Smith..

Not bad.  And if you’re wondering how I have 46 cards, I let go of the second Carlos Santana for 14 vintage cards because I was about out of trade bait.  A few of those netted me a Brian McCann Die-Cut which shortly thereafter landed me 31(!) more cards from 1973-1985, including several stars (one keeper- ’76 Dick Allen) and a Cub.

See?

I peaked at 52 cards, but seven of them landed Aramis over the weekend.  So despite all the randomness, there is a method to my madness, and these are the rest of the Diamond Die-Cuts I’m after:

Ernie Banks

Starlin Castro

Tyler Colvin

Dave Winfield

Ichiro Suzuki

Adrian Beltre

I also have a secondary list of players I’d like to pick up any of (for various reasons) if possible.  These would be my main priority from the secondary list:

Mark Buehrle (for my dad)

Carlos Santana (3rd time’s a charm, right?)

Hanley Ramirez (still flirting with the idea of collecting him on occasion)

Andrew McCutchen (ditto)

I’m not sure I have anything anyone wants, but if you’ve got any of the above on the site (or any others really, whatevs, I’m not too picky or in a hurry or anything) and want to swing a deal for my random, mostly ’70s nonsense, and if you can find me… maybe you can hire– Wait, ha.  I’m game.

So that was a pretty boring post, but at least I had some pictures this time right?  Right??  Anyway, next time, a “Look for Vintage” Fairfield pack that didn’t suck.

‘Til the crossroads…

Ustream Tonight

I will be doing a live break on ustream of 3 blasters I picked up cheap at Shopko last night. Their entire stock of $20 blasters was marked down to $14.99, and I also had a $10 off any purchase over $40 thing so I picked up four 2010 blasters for $12.50 apiece. Sweetness.

I opened the first one, 2010 topps206, in the car immediately after picking it up. It had nothing of note, but come see what resides in the other three at 8:30pm est/7:30pm cst this evening.  I’ll be busting a blaster of topps Chrome baseball, topps Heritage baseball, and topps Platinum football, all from this year.

Go HERE to watch my break, and then after mine is finished, hop on over to the Wicked One‘s ustream channel at 10pm est/9pm cst to watch the first part of his massive early-mid ’90s group break.

EDIT: The Cast went well, a few people showed up, pulled an auto & some nice chrome-age & fractors.  It was a good time, and the new mic works like a dream.  Come on by & say hey next time!

Keyboard Fail

My keyboard is no longer working, so no more posts until I get a new one tomorrow.  I’m sure as heck not writing enough for a proper post with this on-screen.  A real shame too, I just woke from a dream about baseball cards.  Let’s just call it ‘anime-esque’.  And I need also to reveal the results of my 2005 Pack Wars twitter 5 pack break here on the blizzog.

And that concludes my short burst of energy.  Back to sleep I go, till at least 4am hopefully.  Goodnight, sports fans and uber-sweet blogger ladies I have a crush on.

43 home runs?? Seriously?

Random pictures I can do…

(Edit: Just found a contest guess from Stats-on-the-Back in the spam comments between a long ranty spam about flu and medicines or something and spam for… semen pills. Umm, yeah.  Sorry you got lost in the shuffle.  Hopefully I can find something especially useful to send in return for your particular clunkers.)

Going out on a (Hall of Fame) High note!

My last ’75 to show.  Urgh, goodnight again…

Besos.

The Lonestarr Personal Collection #3

Here is my epic Fukudome Japanese game-used ball card:

Exotic and Expensive... >.>

Exotic and Expensive... >.>

We don’t like to talk about how much I spent on this card… suffice to say, it’s the one time I really broke the bank on a card.   I love the card, but what I spent on it still makes me hurt a little inside whenever I think about it.  Let’s just “ooh” and “ahh” and comment it’s coolness and not dwell to deeply on the price, shall we?  That way I’ll feel less guilty for knowing better but getting it anyway.

Having a conscience sucks when it always feels guilty…

2008 TriStar Projections Box Break

I bought my first ever box online in the latter half of last month, from Blowout Cards.  The box was of 2008 TriStar Projections, because it promised lots of hits (4 or 8, depending on your definition) for low low price.  Good enough for me, and minor league cards are cool sometimes.  At the time, I got it for $32 & change shipped, though last I checked, the box had itself jumped up to higher than that, after bottoming out at a couple bucks less than I paid.  But that’s not why you’re here… you came for a box break!

So let’s break it down:

24 packs per box, 8 cards per pack, 192 cards per box

Base

I got around 3/4 of the base set with no dupes.  Forgot to scan the base cards though.  I pulled base of most of the (future) stars, including (off the top of my head) Matt Wieters, Matt LaPorta, Rick Porcello, Jason Heyward, Andrew McClutchen, Colby Rasmus, and Evan Longoria, who already is a star.

The design is pretty slick, but there are two notable problems with the set:

1.) Because the rest of the image the picture of the player is taken from is shoop’d out, leaving only the player, a few players have disembodied body parts encroaching on their action shots (see the Adrien Cardenas parallel below).  It’s very very weird looking and distracting, but there are very few like that, so it’s tolerable.

2.) The stats on the backs of the position player cards are misaligned.  Every.  Single.  Card.  The batting average is supposed to be at the end of the statline, but instead, it is the first thing listed, throwing off the entire line.  It is a pretty bad mistake, which is a shame, because this set is nicer looking than 75% of Topps & UD’s releases from the past year.

Reflectives Parallels (1 per pack)-

I think I got 22 of these, also without dupes.  The reason there are only 22 is because a couple of the #ed parallels were Reflectives, which, except for one memorable one, replaced the regulars.  (Future) Stars included David Price, Matt Wieters, Jed Lowrie, Andrew McClutchen, and Max Scherzer, who’ve all seen major league action, if nothing else.  Jason Heyward is a highly touted prospect as well, it seems.

Reflectives

Reflectives

The Reflectives are freakin’ gorgeous, by the way.

2008 Tristar Projections Scans- Parallels Front

I see Rainbows... @.@

2008 Tristar Projections Scans- Parallels Back

Numbered ones... @o@

I actually pulled a 5th #ed parallel too, but we’ll cover that in a bit.

Autographs (4 Guaranteed per box; same parallel numbering as the non-autos)-

Matt LaPorta base, Casey Weathers base, Chris Withrow Green base #ed /50, Balbino Fuenmayor ORANGE base #ed 3/5(!)

2008 Tristar Projections Autos

Withrow has a really nice sig.

2008 Tristar Projections Scans- Autos Back

And the backs...

All four of these guys seem to have some promise, Matt LaPorta with tons of hype, Casey Weathers being a high draft pick (though Tommy John’d at the moment), Withrow I’d heard of before this pack, and Balbino is struggling but has huge expectations and is still only 20.  Plus he’s freakin’ #ed to /5~!

That’s not all though, oh no.  I did say there were five parallels.  And here is the 5th:

2008 Tristar Projections Jon Still Purple Ref Back

For realz 1/1? Believe it~!

Bonus~!!!!

Bonus~!!!!

Jon Still Purple Reflectives Parallel #ed 1/1.

I will not be saying mojo, because that would be wrong. But it is the first true 1/1 I’ve ever pulled, so it is still really exciting going on two weeks later.  However, being in the Red Sox organization, I did offer it to Shane over at Shoebox Legends if he wants it.

I was going to try and score this box, but I really can just give it a number or letter grade.  I really enjoyed opening this box.  The cards look really nice, there were a lot of hits for a low price, some of them may even end up being good, and I greatly enjoyed taking the time to open them, because, well… minor league cards are “Hope in a Pack”-incarnate.  It’s not just hoping you get something good of someone good, it’s getting something good of someone you *hope* turns out to be good, of someone who hopes *they themselves* turn out to be good.

I don’t know who, if anybody, from my box will become major stars (aside from Longoria, who already is), but it doesn’t matter that much anyway.  I got a whole lot more than what was promised for my $27+ shipping.  Two cards whose print runs equal six… combined, a possibly record long box break (somewhere in the neighborhood of 3 hours, due to having to type to chat with people the whole time), three blog posts, and probably many soon-to-be pending trades as a direct result of the pulls.

What more could I ask for?  Besides posting the pictures and getting them where I want being less of a pain in the @$^%Z4$&%¢@#%$.

K-Mart Cards

My brain woke up shortly after I posted earlier, so I actually got around and went out today, making it to K-Mart before closing time.

There wasn’t much baseball to choose from unfortunately.  No Goudey or Heroes anymore, though there was a fresh supply of ’08 Masterpieces.  The only other thing was regular Upper Deck Series 2 and the USA version of Series 2.

They had Hot Prospects basketball and Icons football, and enough Hockey to choke a moose, if anybody wanted to get other sports involved.  They probably had regular Upper Deck basketball and football too, but I forgot my list, so I can’t say for sure.

If the choices are lacking, it’s possible I can check back at Shopko sometime. Never know how long the random Hobby boxes and unopened retail boxes will hold out, but the boxes they had when I got mine would have been the same price as ten blasters for two of them.  It was all 2006 stuff, but it was some of the nicest that year had to offer in Flair Showcase and Ovation (and something else on their smexy looking upper-low end level that I can’t remember).  They’d have less cards than ten blasters even if it’s heavy on the Masterpieces, but unless the Masterpieces hold some hits (I’m 0 for probably 12 or so in K-Marts non-guaranteed hit discount blasters since they were marked down late last fall, so I’m not hopeful…), those boxes would would give up more hits, one or two being autographs.

There’s a lot of ways we can go with this, assuming it there is enough interest to actually make it happen.  We can always mix and match and replace a couple or four discount ones with more desirable regular price blasters like ’08 Allen & Ginter or this year’s Heritage or Spectrum (ha!) from elsewhere.

It’s getting a little convoluted, but I’m still down if the interest is there.  If you like the idea, leave a comment or send an e-mail.  And if you have an idea on how to make it all work, by all means, let me know.  I’d love to have the chance to be master of ceremonies for a group break for y’all, however we may decide to do it.

Thanks again for your consideration.  Did you all have a funderful day?

Progress?

I spent all afternoon yesterday sorting out baseball cards.  All baseball cards have been separated from other sports.   The Phillies, Yankees, Yankee Stadium Legacies, Cardinals, Dodgers, and White Sox are all officially sorted out.  The Brewers just need to all be put into a single stack.

As well, the outstanding Red Sox have been sorted out and ready to be put into the cases I send my trades in.  The O-Pee-Chee hockey cards haven’t been dealt with yet.  I’ll let you know when they are sent, Shane.

I shuffled the 80 or so cards for Dinged Corners already encased out of their cases.  Since I am sending over 200, the tiny cases that hold only 20 cards max are not going to work.  Therefore, over the weekend I am going to pick up closest thing to an appropriate sized box the “card shop” nearby has, and send it in that.  I really hope it proves safe to send them in.  Apologies in advance for the ridiculous amount of tape that will be completely engulfing the box.

I guess that is all there is to report.  Looks like we’re on schedule for a Sunday or Monday start to The Great Cardening of 2009.  I will let those who I know collect specific teams know when their team is up via their comment section, since I think only about 2.5 people actually pay enough attention to  my blog to know what’s going on.

Now I need to go get my head right.  If you’ll excuse me… *bows*

Going, Going, Gone…

The Great Cardening of 2009 #1

Near the end of my last post I mentioned I had some ideas to roll out.  And so I shall roll out the one that isn’t stupid now, for I have a plan… A plan to effectively shrink and focus my collection.  It may fail horribly, but I need to try something.

So, in the coming days, I’m going to list all of my cards of a particular team in a single post.  If you see something you like, leave me a comment or shoot me an email and I’ll get back to you and hopefully we can make something happen.  Once the deal(s) have been made and I’ve gotten the majority of that team’s cards confirmed to be traded, I’ll move on to the next team, and so on and so forth.  You’ll still be able to contact me about the remnants of prior teams if you get in late though.

After I get my greezy lil’ mitts on one of the last couple blasters of Allen & Ginter they had at Target the other day (assuming they are still there), I’ll get things sorted out and get this donkey train rolling.

Before we start, some things of note:

• There aren’t likely to be very many, if any, Boston Red Sox, as they are pretty much reserved for Shoebox Legends.

• There will be very few Cubs, seeing as I, uhh, collect them.  Only current players that have been traded or guys I’m indifferent towards, as well as some duplicates I get over the course of this will go out.

• The teams that I think I have the most of in no particular order are White Sox, Yankees, Astros, Dodgers, Braves and Phillies.  I may find this to be incorrect, but I do have good number of each.

• If necessary, I may do posts in set form for ones I have a significant amount of, like ’08 Allen & Ginter, Goudey, Upper Deck, Baseball Heroes, and X.

• After baseball is all said & done, I may do football, which I might even have more of.

It all starts with one of the aforementioned teams I have the most of whenever I can be arsed to get around to going through things.  Here’s hoping all goes well.

ONE MORE THING

I’ll finally have an official, if overly simplistic, wantlist up before I begin as well.  That’s probably a good idea.  Yeah…

.::~Outtro~::.

Blasters, We Got Blasters

I picked up  another ’08 Goudey blaster from K-Mart.  Maybe I’m a glutton for punishment.  At least if I’m gonna get a craptacular blaster, it’s half off right?  I’m starting to think I’m the only person who’s actually buying them, because the amount of blasters collecting dust never seems to get smaller.  I had my mom choose it since my luck has been so unflinchingly horrendous with blasters in general.  She didn’t do much better, but it wasn’t horrible overall.

I got a black & white  Derek Jeter for the unclaimed stack of Jeters waiting to be traded and couple more Red Sox to throw into my trade with Shoebox Legends.  And I got a Rod Carew and a Griffey for myself.  The real winner from this blaster though is whoever wants to trade for some Cardinals legends.  I got Stan Musial, Ozzie Smith Sports Royalty (the very last card in the last pack I believe), and Lou Brock.

This wasn’t all I got though.  I also went to Target and got an ’09 Upper Deck Series 1 blaster.  And it was good.  I had my mom choose that one too.  She did better on it.  Cards of note include 20th Anniversary Retrospective cards of Michael Jordan and Margaret Thatcher, O-Pee-Chees of Randy Johnson and John Smoltz, a Black Ultra Rare Chipper Jones Starquest, a Gold Rare Griffey StarQuest (which I am keeping), and an uncommon A-Rod (no commons in this one *le gasp*), and a spiffy looking team USA card.  The guaranteed jersey was even good for once.  I got Josh Hamilton.  Sure kicks the stuffins out of the Zack Duke jersey from the ’08 Series 2 blaster I got a few days ago at any rate.  Does anyone out there in blogland want it?  Or (almost) anything else from these blasters for that matter?  I’m only keeping the Cubs and Griffey, and the White Sox I already have a destination in mind for, but everything else is up for grabs.

I wanted to mention something about how these Upper Deck Cards look before I go.  To my eye the design is absolutely outstanding (special commendation for the bright and colorful Team Leaders subset) and even blows away Topps’ much improved ’09 effort.  The base cards and inserts are all colorful (and this year’s StarQuests are a huge step up) as well, something that Upper Deck is not normally known for, but I really like it.  Whatever extra creative effort that may have went into the flagship set in 2009 really paid off.

I noticed almost immediately there seems to be one thing amiss though… and that is the photography.  Not to say that it is bad in and of itself, but it seems like a lot of the shots are so up close and personal that you could smell the player’s breath.  It may be an effect of the bottom border being closed off, but I’m not digging it, especially with Topps’ borders being smaller than usual and a good deal of their photography actually being on par with some of Upper Deck’s better efforts from the past.

Ok I’m all done here.  Seeyaz next time, when I’ll have a couple of possibly worthwhile ideas to roll out before I start dropping the occasional sketch on ya.

PS: And I might finally have the cards for Dinged Corners sent out by then too.  I may need your address though ladies.  I had found it awhile back when I was almost ready to send it out in I think December of last year, but I believe the bubble mailer with your address is long gone now.  And lets just say the lot (which was about 80 cards strong as of December) has gotten a little bigger since then.

By about 3x…
