Flea Market Finds #12: Ninth Binder page + Mojo

Ugh, mojo is such a dumb word (unless we’re talking super intelligent monkey supervillains or card blogging hands), but I digress.  While the weather is hitting record highs, so to are my blog hits.  And I’m closing in on posting every day for a week straight for maybe the first time ever in the history of this blog.  Things seem to finally coming together in my little corner of the blog netherverse.

Anyway, we’re heading down the final stretch of the flea market posts.  Only a couple more posts after this!  Then I’ll have even more to post, since the flea market comes up again this Saturday.  I’ll try to do this month’s flea market finds up much quicker though.

There are also new sketch card posts in the offing.  I colored seven more last night, and hope to finish the last two Justice Leaguers and three Star Trek captains later tonight.  I also have at least three much-belated trade posts to post, and one fresh one at the moment, with more coming in the not-too-distant future.  So things aren’t going to be slowing for probably the rest of this month anyway.

I will be sending out a few trades this month too, some old (sorry it’s taken so long, guys), some new (I’m trying to be quicker about it).

That all tediously said, let’s get to the action!  Mojo Jojo Hand first!

Three-color patch-jo! Hey wait...

This was the other $1.50 card he gave me for $1 (it was apparently priced $6 at some point).  It’s pretty cool looking, but it’s odd.  The card isn’t #’ed, and the patch itself is making me say “hmm…”, because the colors seem to be reversed.  I can’t figure out where the patch could possibly have come from.  There doesn’t appear to be anywhere on the jersey where a thin strip of white patch meets red jersey with gold on the inside like that.  I is confused and mayby have the eyesight of your average NBA ref, but it was only $1, so whatevs (any information most welcome though).

I also have a regular non-patch version of this, probably pulled from an eBay “hot pack” or retail repack box at some point.  Anyway, if you want either, have at thee!

Now for the fun part of this entirely too long blog post, the next binder page!!

Beckett inserts x2, 1983 topps Traded Don Baylor, 2010 topps Joe Saunders Gold parallel /2010, 1977 topps Graig Nettles, 1983 topps Yaz, Frank Viola rookie!, 1977 topps Willie Randolph (Rookie Cup FTW!) 1983 topps Tom Seaver

Why Purchased: Hall of Famers and stars of their day on the most perfectly designed ever made, 1983 topps, and nearly vintage Yankee greats.

Keepers: Sadly, probably nada.

Notes: Why are topps Traded cards of the era ALWAYS in infinitely better shape than regular cards?

You know how you end up with the name Graig?  When one parent wants to name the kid Greg, and the other wants to name him Craig, and they decide to compromise.  Which is proof that compromise is not always a good thing.

At least they didn’t name him Jermajesty or Caleb or something awful like that.

I didn’t know the Viola was a rookie until I was fooling around looking up late-’70s/mid-’80s rookies by year on Check Out My Cards.

I enjoy Rookie Cups and Rated Rookies entirely too much.

Mind-Blowing Statistic: Yaz had three 40-home run seasons, and no others over 30 (or 28 to be exact).

I was struggling to come up with something, but that’s a pretty good interesting stat right?  All cards except Willie Randolph are available (he’ll be going out in a way overdue trade).  Thanks for stopping by!

I feel like chicken tonight!

Wax Heaven Giveaways!

Here are the cool cards Mario sent when I finally got off my lazy butt and sent him a SASE:

First the 2009 Upper Deck Football Heroes...

I’m trying to spread the love by sending and trading most of the cards received from Mario to those who will appreciate them more than I could ever hope to.  Paul Hornung is offered to Heartbreaking Cards of Staggering Genius, and Tony Dorsett is now officially offered to BigD of Hey That’s Mine.  I’m giving both Big Bens to a Steelers fan I know (other one coming up).  The Maynard/Biletnikoff is the only for sure keeper from this scan, although the Alan Page is tempting, to get a TTM auto maybe.  How epic would that look?

As it is, Alan Page, Plax, Calvin Johnson, Romo/Aikman, and the volleyball dude are available.

Beethoven, Florence Nightingale, and a couple Chicago legends...

Bobby Hull and Mike Ditka are the reason I got these cards in the first place, so they ain’t going anywhere.  I dunno about the historical peoples though.

Kristi Yamaguchi and some rock-headed Presidents...

I used to have a crush on Kristi in my teenage years.  Heh… :d

Do the Presidents look a lil’ toony to anyone else, or is it just me?

Yeah Woodstock! Woo!

Are there any bloggers out there who were at the original?

Malkin/Big Ben

This is also going to my Steeler fan friend.

Now we get to the higher end, a rare taste for me.  But a yummy taste it is. 🙂

Prime Jersey or Patch (whichever you prefer) #ed /50

This one I offered up for BigD’s Hines Ward collecting son.  I got a little something for the whole gang, if they want ’em, that is.

And if they can wait till 2010 to pull off the trade.  I’m a slow trader (slow at doing nearly everything, really) to start with, but I think I’ve got trades going with half the card bloggers right now.  At least it seems that way, not to mention McCann’s great card blogger Secret Santa thing.  I’m very excited about dat though, and hopefully the person I drew will be too.

Prime Time Prime (Jumbo) Jersey #ed 3/5!

I’m not trading away this one, I really like this one.  It’s purrty.  I may have to sell it at some point sadly though. 😦  I’m poor like dirt.  I have iffy mental health as an excuse, but I’ve got to try and make good, the sooner the better, and that’ll take some moneys to start with.

Incidentally, if you’d like to commission a sketch card, gimme a shout.  You can see a few recent examples on my blog.  I’m okay I guess, especially with portraityness.

Enough shameless and very awkwardly done self-promotion.  Last card!

More prime jersey patches, going way back with Frank Gifford #ed /25

That was a heckuva box Mario busted, all three game-used being of the prime jersey variety, if not the sickest of patches.  I like Absolute Memorabilia, one day I will be able to afford a box of it without breaking the bank, or even poking it softly.  I have no intention of being a poor bum my whole life.

That’s all for what I got from big man of the blogosphere.  Maybe I’ll win some stuff from him again (and sign up for Card Corner Club @VOTC) if I can figure out what the heck happened with my Ning password. :/

Oh yeah, congrats to Real Salt Lake on taking down the evil empire of David Beckham and Landon Donovan.  I hope it doesn’t effect the value of my Beckham jersey card though (scans to come when I get it scanned).

And big ups for Matthew Stafford showing some Leftwich-ian toughness in getting the win against the Browns in a surprising shootout.

Until our next…(Besos)

Victory By Default #2

The bootay has arrived!  If you remember, I won a contest at the end of September that was put on by Mario from Wax Heaven.  Well, not so much won, as was just quite possibly the only one who participated (I think that’s how I got that wrestling recapper job last fall too…).  Anyway, the winnings by default are here!  We’ve got 8 autographs (including one dual auto), 10 jerseys (including one Hall of Famer and one Patch), some much needed distraction, and some sensible advice.

The distraction and advice are from and in regards to my would-be romantic entanglement.  Thank you Mario, every bit of both is MUCH-appreciated.

Now then, without further ado, here is the glorious prize that nearly doubles my autograph and game used collections!

Autos First, cuz the jerseys are better.

2008 Topps Co-Signers Arthur Abraham
(Boxer) Solo Sigs AUTOGRAPH… He’s got an excellent record at least.

I really have no idea if any of these guys are any good or not.  Arias shows some promise, looking at Baseball-Reference.  And I’ve heard of Bonifacio at least.

Now for the Jerseys…

2003 Donruss Studio Lance Berkman Big
League Challenge JERSEY #BLC-4… I’m seriously considering trying to track down this set.  I really liked the Pujols Pants card I recently traded to Boxbusters, and I straight up LOVED the Big League Challenge. This card is also somewhat fabled, as it features a unique blue Berkman jersey swatch that your not likely to find anywhere else.  It has also been passed between bloggers twice before in trades, and may be again if I decide not to go after the set.

2004 Leaf Certified Materials Roy
Oswalt Mirror White JERSEY no’d 058/100 #166… Mirror White is pretty… *drools*

2005 Bowman Jesus Cota Futures Game
Gear JERSEY

2005 Upper Deck Sweet Spot Classic DON
SUTTON
Classic Materials JERSEY… Don Sutton as an Astro.  This card will go nicely with in my Hall of Fame Hits binder page, with my ’05 Donruss Champions Frank Robinson swatch of something, Donruss Americana 2 Willie Mays swatch of something, and beat up 2002 Diamond Kings Roberto Clemente Gold Parallel #’d to /100.

2007 SPx Justin Verlander Winning
Materials JERSEY #’d 015/199

2007 Topps Allen & Ginter Mark
Mulder PANTS

2007 Upper Deck MLB Artifacts Michael
Young Divisional Artifacts JERSEY

2007 Upper Deck Spectrum Khalil Greene
Spectrum Swatches #’d 154/199

2008 SPx Kenji Johjima Winning
Materials PATCH #’d 10/40… This was the reason I entered in the first place.  I loves me some patches, and this is a nice one.  I’m expecting a bounce-back year for Johjima-san (is that the right title to use there?  I’ll have to ask Yuta…).  I think he can be a top 10 or so catcher again.

2008 Upper Deck Spectrum Jacque Jones
Retrospectrum Swatches JERSEY… One for the Cubs Collection, even though he is depicted as a Twin, and is unfortunately hardly remembered and even then not thought highly of as a Cub, despite being solid both years he was with the team.

Pretty nice lot eh?  A little Astros-centric with the extras for my Cubby blue bleedin’ heart, but all of them are bonafied superstars and/or Hall of Famers, and that Mirror White is soooo shiny *@_@*, so I’m down with that.  I love the lot Mario.  Thank you so much for everything.  You’ve been a good friend to me, and I will try to return the favor in the future, just as soon as I have something to offer back.

As for this lot, I’m for sure only keeping Sutton, Kenji, Jacque, the boxer (for novelty’s sake), and maybe Berkman for my Personal Collection, so it might just be coming time for BTHE to hold it’s first ever contest *inadvertantly sponsored by Mario*.  Assuming anyone in the Sports Card Blogosphere actually regularly reads my nonsense, of course.  If nothing else, please inquire if you want/need/will die without any of the cards I’m not keeping.  We’ll see if we can’t work something out. 😉
