COMC Keepers: Basketball y Football

Hi!   Wow, we’re gonna be posting two days in a row!  If I may be so bold as to promote an internet buddy of mine’s podcast for my nerdier readers out there before we get to it, I’m listening to the latest Nerd Nation Podcast (with guest Savage Hawkman’s Mark Poulton) as I type this.  Lots of technical difficulties this week, but the interview is aces.  Check the archives too, they tend to get some pretty outstanding guests.

With the unsolicited promotion out of the way, let’s get right into this here recent COMC order then.  We’ll start with the basketball & football keepers I guess, since that’s what I typed in the title section.

First up, new Steven Jackson!

Early 2000s Upper Deck multisport Moss/KG and an LT /799..

Shakespearean Actor Eddie George!

It’s true.  He’s Julius Caesar!  I can’t find the review, but he’s apparently pretty good.

Sweet Spot Warrick Dunn, Prestige & BowSter Jamaal Charles..

Upper Deck & Philadelphia Marques Colston jerseys..

Flashback Fabrics and Blue Inception /209 MJDs. Two of the swankier cards in the whole lot. Good stuff..

Kareem Sticker, embossified AI, Jersey AI, LeClair, Granger, Love, and Pierce..

I guess LeClair isn’t strictly a keeper, but I’d need a Byfuglien or Marian Hossa relic for it, so the window is pretty narrow.  That’s also my first hockey swatch card.  My only other Hockey hits are Doug Gilmour and (I think) Tim Taylor autos.  I guess Kareem and Kevin Love could be had too, if you have something similar of someone I might like more.

Reflections football was one of my faves from the past decade, so being able to get the jersey third of my impending Paul Pierce trifecta from the basketball version was nice.

Studio Deron Williams powder blues & a Luther Head auto that's all kinds of classy. The ink is even silver. Freakin' sweet..

Finally, Luol Deng Bowman sticker auto, Trilo3y jersey, & Sterling jerseyfractor /199..

And that’s all for this one.  Baseball keepers are on deck (also Bears, I’m not going back and adding more to this post), random keepers in the hole.  All I need to do is hunt up my Deng & Head rookies or upgrade to cooler ones (all I have of either is plane ol’ Topps I think), and kapow, Trifecta complete!  Thanks for reading, folks. 🙂

Until our next…

Trade at the Plate

I think this is the last trade I have all scanned up and ready for the postin’.  It comes from Brian @ Play at the Plate.  It’s a little different than the standard trade.  He touched upon some collections that rarely see any trade action.  When I first went through things, my first thought was that the selection of cards I received was “inspired”.  Behold!

Football! And random hot chick.

B hit on almost all my non-Bears collections with Moon, Moss, Cunningham, and Dunn.  Greg Olsen, I think is more athletic than skilled, but I like him.  And a Beautiful Person.  I covered the formation of the Beautiful People when I used to recap the show for a wrestling satire site back in the day.  Let’s just say they didn’t have the most amazing of starts, but they got better.  Only ever got three feedback, two right after I announced I was quitting.  I thought I’d try to get a gig at 411mania afterward, but I never did.  Was so totally burnt out after I quit and eventually got sidetracked with this whole blogging thing.  Maybe  More wrestling to come.

Cubs, Rhynos, Wrestlers, and Aki!

Aki for the now defunct Asian player collection.  Aside from the certain ones I collect, I just save them for Dinged Corners and Shot Not Taken now.

I think I had the Rhynos already, but they are always welcome, and if they are dupes, I will see that they find a good home.

More cards from the wrestling blaster, of which I received the entirety.  AJ, Booker, and Sting are keepers all, though only AJ and Booker do I actively collect.  What an antiquated sentence.

Also, Sarge! 😀

There we go!

Some excellent additions to the Hawk, Vladdy, Carew, and Billy Williams collections.  The Finest card in the center is #ed out of /1999 I believe.  I think Billy Williams is my favorite from this bunch though.  One of my greatest cards is a Billy Williams one, but other than that, I’m pretty lacking in his cards.  He and Fergie Jenkins don’t get nearly enough love amongst Hall of Famers.

More Wrestling, a lil' WBC, Angel and Kaz Ishii

Mmmhmm… Sarita.  Yes plz.

I said I’m just saving the Asian players for Ray and P&L, but I hope Night Owl can use this Kaz, because I sent it to him along with a couple cards he was wanting yesterday.

Angel Guzman is pretty good.  I have faith in the late innings if he’s pitching.

Still need a BUNCH of the chromey WBCs.  I guess this means I will have to update my wantlist… *sigh*

I dunno what Rob Terry’s been up to, since I haven’t watch iMPACT! in awhile or read any recaps.  He was pretty much just a big scary lookin’ dude that was too green to do that much last time I checked.  It matters little though, the hits were just icing on the cake, in this instance.

Finally, I definitely wasn’t expecting the Debra-worn swatch!  I had no idea there were any bloggers that collected wrestling cards in any sort of meaningful way, except for maybe Offy, and I definitely wasn’t expecting to see a card from as far back as when Debra was around.  That is really cool.

Thanks Brian, this was a great trade!

Stay tuned for a little trade bait late tonight/early tomorrow.

Fly me to the moon…

Belated Trade Post (Aren’t They All?)

Yes, for me they are.  Anyway, here’s the cards I received from Shot Not Taken back in 2003.  Lol, kidding.  It was late summer/early fall I think.   Anyway, here’s a selection of the cards I received!  All but three are 2006 BBM Japanese baseball cards, which I’ve come to learn have a tendency to be EPIC on occasion.  You will see at least one such example below.

Icons Steve Slaton RC #'ed /799

Before we get to that BBM though, let’s start with the Icons Steve Slaton RC.  The foil is surprisingly not that fugly, considering it’s Icons we’re talking about.  Slaton has come on a little in recent weeks, no doubt due to rediscovering his ability to either phase through stuff or turn invisible, as shown in this card. 😛

A couple names you might recognize. Yes, Kawakami and Iwamura. *sigh*

Hmm… I think I might know what to send to The Troll for making the closest guess and finishing last in the 5000 Hit Contest.  How does a Japanese card of Iwamura sound as a consolation prize?  Oh, and speaking of said contest, would the second place winner please choose from the four remaining cards please?  The V-Mart/B-Phil X-Fractor is taken, leaving the four football cards from which to choose.

More base cards for your viewing pleasure.

Two ex-Cubs (well, Cabrera was drafted by ’em), who went on to be stars in Japan.  Along with the legendary  Tuffy Rhodes, I guess the trinity is complete.

A couple more names American fans may be vaguely familiar with in this 6.

The top three are second version cards, and now we get to the subsets! Yay subsets!

I guess second version is kinda like an Updates/Traded-type set.  I’m not exactly well-versed in Japanese cards though.  See the great Japanese Baseball Cards blog for expert analysis.

And yes, we have a Benny Agbayani sighting!

I like the Cool & Toughs.

I’m sure it’s just me being oblivious, but the Cool & tough cards being both vertical and hoizontal threw me off just a touch.  Huh… Here’s some more:

Are YOU cool & tough?

Well, are ya?

Hottie interlude. :d

The One with the Wacky Checklists

Can we please please PLEASE get wacky picture team checklists in 2010 topps?  Please?!  Also here’s some more Ceremonial First Pitch cards.  More on that later.

Finally, we arrive at the big hits of the bunch, and two instant favorites in my personal collection.

Proof that these Jersey and card frame things can in fact be awesome!

Yes, a Fergie Jenkins card and swatch frame!  How cool is that?  I’m not sure what the swatch is though.  I’m not convinced it’s jersey.  Whatever though, still hella cool.  And Warrick Dunn!  Running slight fever & a little nauseous patch! (cuz it’s not quite sick, y’see, but still cool… *sigh* nevermind)

Dude’s ridiculously good at pulling good jersey & card frames, having also pulled Frank Thomas, two Karl Malone’s, and an Antoine Walker (it’s pretty awesome to me at least) on his blog.

Thank you very much, Ray.  I’ll have more stuff coming your way soon. 🙂

Oh yeah, I promised something epic at the top, didn’t I?  Here it is:

Tell me that ain't EPIC!

Until our next…
